In our latest Skirmish Wargames YouTube video we discuss the Gothic Horror literary and film genre, which has spawned a veritable horde of tabletop miniatures games, pitting intrepid monster hunters against vampires, werewolves, zombies and other creatures of the night.
While we didn’t manage to score a copy of Warhammer Quest: Cursed City when it became available for pre-order on April 3, 2021, we do fortunately have a frightening number of undead miniatures and a host of Gothic Horror wargaming rulesets already in our collection.
For example, we could play a Witch Hunters vs Vampire game using the classic Mordheim rules from Games Workshop. Or we pit Ramtep the Strigoi against legendary witch hunters Johann and Wilhelm, in the Warhammer Fantasy Skirmish Vampire Hunt scenario from the 2002 Warhammer Annual.
We could even crack open the original Warhammer 40,000 Rogue Trader book from 1987 and dispatch an imperial inquisitor and his retinue to fight a horde of zombie thralls, serving a horrifying space vampire from the warp.
In our video we also look at a number of Gothic Horror miniatures games residing outside of the Warhammer universe, including Chaos in Carpathia from Four-Color Studios, Gothic Horror Vampire Wars from West Wind Productions, and Osprey Games’ upcoming The Silver Bayonet: A Wargame of Napoleonic Gothic Horror, from prolific games designer Joseph McCullough.
So if you have a hankering to fight some vampires on the tabletop, or maybe just enjoy Gothic Horror in general, sharpen a stake and fire up the video player at the top of this post. Perhaps you’ll find an interesting ruleset or two to add to your own wargame collection.
