It’s hard to believe that it’s been 15 years since the first Hellboy movie hit theaters, way back in 2004. The iconic fantasy/horror film was directed by Guillermo del Toro and starred Ron Perlman in the title role, both of whom also returned for Hellboy II, The Golden Army, which was released in 2008.
No doubt hoping to capitalize on an expected wave of movie-driven Hellboy enthusiasm, WizKids released its Hellboy and the B.P.R.D. Seven-Figure Action Pack for the HorrorClix (paid link) and HeroClix collectible miniatures games in 2007, just before the financial crisis helped kill off HorrorClix, as well as a number of other promising tabletop miniatures games.
Fast forward to April of 2019 and Mike Mignola’s half-demon paranormal investigator is returning to theaters in a new movie directed by Neil Marshall and starring Stranger Things alum David Harbour. Big Red will also be battling occult forces on the tabletop in Hellboy: The Board Game (paid link) by Mantic Games, which is set to drop sometime this month.
So in honor of all that upcoming Hellboy goodness, we’re pleased to present an old-school game of Hellboy vs Cthulhu HorrorClix, with Big Red and the B.P.R.D. battling minions of the Elder Gods on a stolen research vessel somewhere near the sunken city of R’lyeh.
It seems that a vampiric cult leader named Morgana has recruited a cadre of gullible academics and engineers to build a strange device on the deck of her commandeered ship. Upon activation, the arcane machinery promptly summons an Avatar of Cthulhu, who begins feasting on the shocked cultists, perhaps as part of some unspeakable ritual.
Will Hellboy and company be able to stop Morgana, the Avatar of Cthulhu and their loyal minions from opening a dimensional portal for the Elder Gods? Check out our latest HorrorClix gameplay video to find out.
