Colorado-based gaming convention Tacticon 29 was held Sept. 28 — Oct. 1, 2017 at the Crowne Plaza Airport Convention Center in Denver. This year’s Tacticon was held in conjunction with comic book, collectible and Sci-Fi convention Rocky Mountain Con 5, allowing registrants to attend both events in the same venue.
Tacticon 29 offered a schedule packed with hosted roleplaying and tabletop miniatures games, as well as a huge selection of free-to-play board games and a number of live demonstrations presented by game designers.
We spent much of our time in the tabletop miniatures room, where were systematically humbled playing our first-ever games of Zombicide (hosted by David Clapper), This Is Not a Test (hosted by Nick Wooster) and Fear and Faith (hosted by Marc Gacy).
Over the course of the event, the Tacticon miniatures room also featured Flames of War, Star Wars X Wing Miniatures, a very lively Warhammer 40,000 tournament, a gigantic tabletop American Civil War battle, Cthulhu Wars and a variety of other miniatures-based wargames and board games.
During a break in the tabletop gaming action, we headed down the hall to Rocky Mountain Con, where we spent a bit more than planned on new minis, autographed art and a few choice collectibles. I even scored a copy of the new Badger comic book, signed by creator Mike Baron himself.
We were told that Tacticon 29 attendance was down a bit, possibly due to the convention having different dates this year and moving to a new venue. Personally though, we had a fantastic time and never ran out of amazing things to see and do.
