Urban Manhunt Tabletop Miniatures Game

Inspired by dystopian cinematic thrillers such as Escape from New York and Running Man, with a little Hunger Games and Battle Royale thrown in for good measure, Urban Manhunt (paid link) is a 28mm tabletop miniatures game that pits sanctioned hunters against free-range criminals inside a hellish prison city.

Published by Spectrum Games (paid link), Urban Manhunt takes place in the year 2049, decades after the Second American Civil War. Shattered cities have been converted into walled prisons, permanently incarcerating outcasts and lawbreakers from every level of society.

Life inside a prison city is brutal beyond compare, so it’s no wonder that so many inmates volunteer for Urban Manhunt, the wildly popular televised event where transgressors try to outwit flamboyant and lethal Hunters, in hopes of earning a full pardon for their crimes.

Urban Manhunt is a great example of minimalist skirmish wargaming. Players only need one miniature apiece to represent their Hunters, though in our gameplay video above, we also used repurposed plastic minis to represent our crafty “Crims.” However if you don’t have a stockpile of suitable Crim figures, the game provides 2D paper standups that work just fine.

Criminal actions are determined by the interaction of each inmate’s Crim Card with the special Control Card that’s drawn each at the beginning of each turn, as well as by basic parameters outlined in the rulebook. This card-driven criminal AI means that Urban Manhunt can easily be played as a solo game, as well as player vs player.

Another interesting feature of Urban Manhunt is that Hunters are strictly forbidden from attacking each other. Of course that doesn’t mean they can’t smirk a bit when the competition gets mobbed by hostile Crims.

Two watch us pit our own Hunters — Deacon Wrath and Steel Menace — against an army of filthy outcasts and violent maniacs, just click on the video player at the top of this post. For more information on the Urban Manhunt tabletop miniatures game, Click Here (paid link).
